Chris Murphy & The Blind Blakes
Jazz, Swing, and Blues
The music of Los Angeles based retro/punk/jazz/music archivists, The Blind Blakes is a dangerous, thrilling, and sultry musical cocktail party.
Find yourself stopping for drinks at the sexy bordellos of 1920s New Orleans, the greasy juke joints of Chicago, the gambler riverboats of Mississippi, the smoky saloons of jazzy Harlem, and the Parisian gypsyjazz hot clubs for last call!
The Blind Blakes are a harmonious blend of Blue Note Records, Big top Circus Music, Havana Bar Band, Film Noir Soundtrack, Beat Poetry Bongo solo, Gypsy campfire fiddle fest, Harry Smith Anthology of Folk Music and early morning gospel Baptist church choir.
Press for The Blind Blakes:
“Murphy does the devil’s handiwork on four strings with a winning presence and a gypsy’s knack.”
~Future Music Magazine
“Haunting and enchanting, [Chris is] a talented and innovative player traveling on the edge.”
~Dirty Linen Magazine
Chris Murphy and The Blind Blakes are proud to announce the debut of first album, WATER UNDER THE BRIDGE. The ambitious 14-song collection takes a decidedly post-modern approach to pre-war music, culling as much from Basie proto-bop as the swinging of Stuff Smith, Joe Venuti and Stephane Grappelli, while tipping its hat to New Swing stalwarts like the Squirrel Nut Zippers and roots revivalists like the Carolina Chocolate Drops. With vocal cameos by Childress on the seductive and swinging “Table for Two” and the gloriously filthy “Tom Cat Blues,” Water Under the Bridge makes an inviting, even invigorating, splash.
